I recently attended the Jet Set: Travel in Style event (see my recap on The Little Style File for more info on some amazing brands and a great bash) and didn’t have enough time (or room in my budget) to grab a new outfit. So what did I do? Shopped my closet! I am getting more savvy at combining pieces that have been relegated to the top shelf or bottom rack, resurrecting them in a way that suits my style. I settled on this:
Tank top: Old Navy- $7 online (cheaper in store)
Skirt: Forever 21- $17.80 (similar here)
Shoes: Calvin Klein @ DSW clearance- $20 (similar here)
Bag: Coach- gift (similar here)
Earrings: My own design; similar here
Necklace and ring: my push presents 🙂 I adore vintage-style jewelry!
I have had this skirt in my closet for almost 3 years and never worn it. I just couldn’t figure out a top to go with it that wasn’t basic black! I do love midi skirts or just below the knee types, but in my book- they have to be worn with high heels. I don’t typically make or follow fashion rules, but a skirt that hits you mid-calf can take you from towering to tiny without the right shoes. Also, high-waisted skirts work better with my long waist- something I am just figuring out after all these years. If you watch Suits, Rachel (Meghan Markle) always wears high waist skirts for a similar reason.
I had a pair of patent leather Mary Janes picked out but you know what I realized? With my pasty pale legs, hematite looked better than the stark contrast of black on ivory. I think it is time for a spray tan since I can’t even post the close up pics my new friend took of my shoes. A huge thanks to Lisa and Kaitlyn of SistersMarie for taking pics! Oh, and I am posing in front of my dream brownstone…some day!
What ways have you shopped your closet so far this summer?
Old navy is the way to go. I got great shorts, demin shirts and tanks there for summer. And thats an adorable skirt but not sure I can pull it off as well as you 🙂
Thanks Jill! I adore Old Navy- pretty much something in my wardrobe is from there every day 🙂 Oh and the skirt? The best part about high waists is that they hit you at your smallest point. I literally can't wear pants because I am so disproportionate, but can do things that are flowy below my natural waist. I say you can do it!
When I first saw your event recap I thought you were wearing an expensive dress! Amazing that you actually spent less than $25! (Haven't forgotten to get back to you… my dad is visiting. I'll email this weekend!)
Thanks Lisa!! I am such a nut, I always add up how much I spend on my outfit in my head and try to keep it under $50. I just don't believe that fashion has to come with a high price tag (and I know you feel the same way!). Have a wonderful time with your dad, looks like you had an amazing vacation!
