Yay! Spring is officially here, although by the look of the overcast sky and melting snow you wouldn’t know it. I am sharing my favorite 4 ways to celebrate spring today. I like to keep it under budget, so let’s get cheap & cheerful as the Brits say.
There is nothing I love more than a new cocktail to ring in spring. I recently received LEMONCOCCO, a naturally flavored lemon & coconut beverage, in my Degustabox. One thing I love about this food-based subscription box is that I get to experience new flavors, concepts, recipes and treats without leaving my kitchen. They often share products from other countries, and this month was no exception. The LEMONCOCCO is inspired by the classic lemon & coconut drink stands that can be found along the cobblestoned streets of Rome. Want a culinary surprise every month? Grab your first Degustabox for only $9.99!
Want to kick that LEMONCOCCO up a notch? Add in Limoncello that you made all by yourself. Here is a recipe I adapted from Martha Stewart, the queen of at cocktail and all things DIY! This is a perfect gift to give for Mother’s Day…grab a gorgeous glass bottle with a stopper and make mom’s day. Pair it with a bottle of bubbly to really put a grin on her face- a Limoncello Champagne cocktail screams “I LOVE YOU MOM!”
1 liter of vodka (Use high proof, around 160; this helps extract the flavor and aroma of lemons. Try Devil’s Springs Vodka)
3 cups sugar
3 cups boiling hot water
1. Peel strips of zest from all lemons (zest is only the yellow stuff…the white is pith which will make your drink bitter). Put zest and vodka in an airtight container for 2 days to up to 1 week.
2. Stir together sugar and hot water until sugar is completely dissolved. Let cook, then stir into vodka/zest mix. Refrigerate in an airtight container for a day.
3. Before serving, strain out zest.
Every season, I switch out my scents to match my mood and the general weather. Sounds crazy, but I love to ring in spring with something fresh and invigorating! I buy roll on perfume oil from a store called Little Batch Apothecary. My skin reacts poorly to regular perfume (everything I wear ends up smelling like Avon perfume circa 1985) but with oils I don’t have that issue. They also started producing alcohol-free hair perfume that can be used as a body spray and on linens. This store has dozens of scents; my favorite is Lemongrass Coconut for spring, but I am dying to try Carrot Cake, Pineapple Orchid and Lavender Cacao.
