Try a Trend Tuesday: Fuchsia Lipstick

There is such a thing as the “lipstick effect” that occurs during economic downturns. It is the basic belief that consumers will purchase less expensive luxury goods ie. lipstick instead of their more expensive luxury counterparts (think designer bags, shoes, etc…). I  may not have scientific evidence to support this, but I do know a pristine new tube of gorgeous lip color will at least temporarily brighten an otherwise gloomy day in my world.

The current lipstick trend can work for everyone- fuchsia. I often buy a new shade of lipstick, only to let it sit in my makeup bag only to be tested out from time to time and wiped off because I feel that I can’t carry it off or it is too bold for “just the grocery store.” But you know what? I have started getting the courage wear it more and more, and I feel a little peppier those days. Many times, people smile and nod in approval, even remarking that they wish they could pull that color off. I always tilt my head and ask “Why can’t you?”

Seriously, ask yourself, why can’t you? It is just makeup. It wipes off. It doesn’t cost a lot of money to take a fun chance on a new trend.

Here are my three current favorite fuchsia shades, all under $20.

The Cult Classic Brand

MAC in Impassioned- $16 at maccosmetics.com 

This shade of fuchsia is leans to the coral end of the spectrum. It is definitely bright, and lends a little neon pop to your pout. It is an “amplified creme” finish which is much more moisturizing than their matte finish (which I find to be almost unwearable…my lips feel like they need constant Chapstick when I wear MAC Matte lipsticks). This color does look lovely with a tan- it truly wakes up your face.

The Drugstore Darling

L’Oreal Extraordinaire by Colour Riche in Fuchsia Orchestra- $9.99 at lorealparisusa.com

This
shade does delve into the purple part of the fuchsia family. Since it
is more of a liquid lipstick than a creme, it is the most moisturizing
of the bunch but does need to be frequently applied. One thing I do
like, though is the fact that I don’t need a mirror for touch ups. This
shade was how I dipped my toe into the bright lipstick trend- my
training wheels, you may say!

The New Kid on the Block

This is a true fuchsia to me- pink, pink, pink! It doesn’t veer into Barbie territory, though, since it doesn’t carry that bubble gum undertone. This is a creme lipstick, and it goes on smooth and silky with even coverage. The best part of this is how it wears- it stays on for hours, and when it does start to wear off (a long time later, I have woken up the next day with color still on my lips), it does so evenly.  At that point, I love to put a little gloss over it and wear it like a lip stain! This has serious pigment power- GORGEOUS.
