Not many people know that I was a a teacher for a brief period of time.
When I was little I would arrange my stuffed animals in a semi-circle and lecture them on core subjects, like how to brush Barbie’s hair. I spent hours extolling the virtues of crimping vs. curling (hey…it was the 80s). My mom was a teacher for 25 years, so I think this encouraged my love of education and my grandmother owned a beauty salon, so yep…apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
In my late twenties, I was stuck in the corporate world and unsatisfied with my general contribution to society. I wanted to give back, I wanted to feel good at the end of the day instead of vaguely uncertain as to who I helped or why. I decided to ditch the corporate world and join Teach for America.
Primary Tote Bag- $18.95
This was one of the most difficult endeavors I have ever undertaken.
I was placed in Englewood, IL which has a reputation for being one of Chicago’s most dangerous neighborhoods. I taught 2nd grade, but honestly I don’t know how much teaching I accomplished. I faced gang members, drug dealers, vandalism, and more. In fear of my life and sanity, I wasn’t able to complete my two year commitment.

There are SO many teachers who go through more than I ever did on a daily basis, and I can’t even begin to describe the respect I have for them. Even if they aren’t dealing with similar threats, they still have the daunting task of educating today’s youth. And I am forever grateful for their tireless efforts.
So, I absolutely love working with companies that support and celebrate teachers. I just discovered Teacher Peach, a Chicago-based company that is dedicated to supporting the social and emotional well-being of teachers through the products they create and community they have cultivated.
Chat Bubble Cards- $12.95 for a set of 12
Cool Teacher Pocket Folders- $34.95 for a pack of 25
They have an array of products for teachers- from subscription boxes containing “A Note from the Teacher” note cards to teacher totes to desk organizers, they have everything! When I was preparing my classroom, I realized quickly that the majority of my supplies were paid for directly out of my pocket. I would have been THRILLED to receive a set of markers, much less note cards, envelopes and stamps to go with them!
A Note from the Teacher Starter Kit- $14.95
Once Upon Box- $39.95
Once Upon Box sample contents
I think this would make the perfect teacher gift for the beginning of the year- a way to help your children’s teachers get off to a great start and let them know you support their efforts. The Once Upon a Box has a little bit of everything. Check out their site to see what you can send to your fave teacher this year! Choose one item, or a subscription service to keep the good times rolling throughout the school year.
Teachers rule! 🙂
